ROYAL Lytham’s Ian Hill rolled back the years to win the Fylde Amateur Championship – 19 years after his previous triumph in the event. He beat a high-quality field of local talent at St. Anne’s Old Links. The course was in magnificent condition, with the greens exceptionally quick, and Hill rose to the occasion. However, it was Curtis Dean, from the host club, who had set the early pace. He destroyed the front nine with a superb exhibition of putting, going to the turn in 32 strokes, four under par. The back nine proved tough, playing from the gold championship tees, and Dean stumbled a little coming home.

However, he still held a slender advantage shooting a very respectable 70, two under par. Hill shot 72 (level par) in the morning as he produced only 24 putts in his 72, an outstanding effort on the greens. Scott Gowland (Blackpool North Shore) came in after the morning round with 73, Andy McLoughney (St Anne’s Old Links) managing one better.

In a tie for second place was Carl Smith (Fleetwood) with a level par 72. The afternoon scores were varied as some of the leaders from round one fell away, while Hill relentlessly produced par after par to take the championship by two shots. He is now looking forward to defending his title at Fairhaven next year. Prizes were presented by the captain of Old Links, Bruce Turner.

The Fylde Championship was sponsored by Stewart Longton Caravans, while a vote of thanks was given to Paul Clark, events director of the PGA North Region for assembling and updating the scoreboard especially for the competition.
